What is food culture? What can we learn from it?
What is food culture? By definition, food culture refers to the attitudes, beliefs, and practices as well as the networks and institutions surrounding the production, distribution, and consumption of food. This is a lot of think about, so let's first focus on food culture being the connection and experience we have with food.

Food has a way of connecting us across cultures and generations. It brings us together. It tells stories. I ask you...
“What are your food stories? What foods provide you comfort and why? Are there dishes that remind you of your travels, family, friends, or childhood memories?"
What can we learn?
A lot of these food stories originate from our ancestors. We can also view food culture as preserving our ethnic cultural heritage in addition to our surrounding environment impacting the foods we eat. There are many things we can learn from our food. Check out the infographic below for more specifics.
Conversation starter with kids
We can use the concept of food to engage kids. Furthermore, we can use international cuisines to teach and share cultures with kids. Food can open young minds, raising awareness and encouraging diversity. Check out this Time Magazine article for a great conversation starter to prompt kids to think about what other kids eat around the world!
